Allegro Parkland proudly offers luxury Independent Living, Assisted Living and Memory Care, where residents can create thriving relationships within the community. But another great service they provide is an onsite support group led by the American Parkinson’s Disease Association’s South Florida Chapter.

What is Parkinson’s Disease?

Parkinson’s is a neurodegenerative disorder that affects predominately the dopamine-producing (“dopaminergic”) neurons in a specific area of the brain called substantia nigra.

Symptoms generally develop slowly over years. The progression of symptoms is often a bit different from one person to another due to the diversity of the disease. People with PD may experience:

  • Tremor, mainly at rest and described as pill rolling tremor in hands; other forms of tremor are possible
  • Slowness and paucity of movement (called bradykinesia and hypokinesia)
  • Limb stiffness (rigidity)
  • Gait and balance problems (postural instability)

How Does the Support Group Work?

The group consists of residents with Parkinson’s, their family members, and additional residents of the surrounding local neighborhoods of Parkland, Boca Raton and Coral Springs. Various topics are discussed by different speakers to educate those in attendance on the components of the disease. Guest speakers can range from neurologists that speak on advances in research and medication to physical therapists who teach tips and tricks on overcoming physical challenges.

What Are the Benefits of the Group?

Attending a group like this can be revolutionary for both those enduring the disease and those who take on the role of caregiver. Knowing you’re not alone and that you have a support system comprised of those that share the same feelings, emotions and concerns as you can be exceptionally beneficial.
