Stuart is home to many incredible residents, but few can say they've witnessed over a century of history quite like Mrs. Ruth Whiteman. On February 7, 2025, Ruth celebrated her 102nd birthday, marking an extraordinary milestone. Family, friends, local media and dignitaries, and Alto residents and associates gathered to honor her remarkable life and legacy. Stuart Mayor Campbell Rich was in attendance and presented Ruth with a special birthday proclamation.
A Life Well-Lived
Born in Philadelphia, PA, in 1923, Ruth was the eldest of 10 siblings. From a young age, she learned the values of hard work and resilience, often spending summers with her beloved grandmother, Mary Elizabeth Johnston, in Miquon, PA. Those cherished days were filled with life lessons—helping with chores, cooking, and enjoying the simplicity of small-town life.
In 1997, Ruth made her way to Port Salerno, embracing the coastal lifestyle she loves. Now a treasured member of the Alto community in Stuart, FL., she continues to bring warmth and joy to those around her.
A Passion for Creativity & Community
Ruth’s love for creativity and connection shines brightest during the holidays. Known for crafting and sharing beautiful handmade ornaments, she spreads joy each Christmas season. Staying active in the community, she thrives on participation in Alto’s many engaging activities, proving that a full life is one filled with purpose and passion.

Alto Executive Director Kaitlyn Oteri shared her sentiments. “At Alto Stuart, we love to celebrate our residents every day – but this day was very special. Ruth celebrated a beautiful 102 years of life with her closest family and friends. Seeing her happiness as she enjoyed cake and coffee with loved ones and humble response to such a significant moment speaks volumes of her character. Hearing Ruth talk about her life experiences, how it was to grow up with nine siblings, and her thoughts on how things are today made us realize how ageless life is and that every day can be cherished. Happy birthday Ruth! It is a privilege to us that you call Alto Stuart home.”
