At Allegro Harrington Park, community spirit thrives in countless ways, but few groups embody it as wholeheartedly as The Knit Wits. This remarkable knitting club is comprised of members Lakshmi Venugopal, Elfriede Kuepper, Gloria Ostacher, Sandra Cooper, Sue Chiang, and Rosalie Pastore (not pictured: Linda Glasgal and Louise Fischer) who share a passion not only for crafting beautiful items but also for giving back to those in need. Sandra fondly describes the group and the impact they make. “The Knit Wits of Allegro are a group of women who love to create and express themselves. The lovely things that are created are put on sale and the proceeds are donated to local reputable charities and it helps us ladies keep busy and gives us the opportunity to give back to the community.”
The Knit Wits Club welcomes anyone at Allegro Harrington Park who shares a love of knitting. The group gathers weekly on Monday afternoons, creating a warm and lively atmosphere filled with creativity, laughter, and fellowship. What makes this group even more special is their dedication to making a difference in the community. Throughout the year, they organize sales of their handcrafted items, with all proceeds donated to reputable charities in New Jersey.
This holiday season, The Knit Wits outdid themselves, hosting two incredibly successful sales events that raised over $700. Their efforts had a profound impact, as the funds were donated to two outstanding organizations: the Food Pantry in Hillsdale, NJ, and the Center for Hope & Safety, which supports domestic violence victims in the Bergen County area. These contributions brought relief, comfort, and support to individuals and families facing hardship during this festive season.
What truly sets The Knit Wits apart is their generosity and compassion. Their love for knitting is matched only by their commitment to helping others. Whether it's creating cozy scarves, warm hats, or other delightful pieces, every stitch they make is filled with care and the desire to uplift those in need. Their selfless efforts remind us of the power of community and the importance of loving our neighbor.
This holiday season, as we celebrate the joy of giving, let us take inspiration from this beautiful group of ladies. Their story is a testament to how simple acts of kindness can create ripples of positivity, impacting the lives of so many.
Allegro Lifestyle Director Laura Finbloom says it well. “The ladies of The Knit Wits Club are exceptional women that love to make beautiful hand stitched items for those that are in need, and for their Allegro friends and families. Their hard work and dedication give them a sense of accomplishment and they find great joy in their philanthropic efforts, knowing that they can make a difference in the lives of others.”
